AustCham Attends The 71st Anniversary of the Battle of Gapyeong Commemoration and Gapyeong Scholarships Awards Ceremony

AustCham Korea marked the 71st anniversary of the Battle of Gapyeong with a commemorative ceremony at the Australia and New Zealand Memorial in Gapyeong on Friday, 22nd of April, 2022.

The event honoured the brave soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who fought alongside South Korea during the Korean War. The Battle of Gapyong, (April 23–25, 1951), was a Korean War battle in which vastly outnumbered United Nations forces checked the communist advance on the South Korean capital of Seoul. Two Commonwealth battalions—the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Regiment (2PPCLI) and the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR)—bore the brunt of the attack, and their defense of the Gapyong River valley against an entire enemy division helped halt the Communist Spring Offensive. Today, the battle is regarded as one of the most famous actions fought together by the Australian and Canadian armies in Korea.

The event was attended by the Australian Ambassador, H.E Catherine Raper, the New Zealand Ambassador, H.E. Philip Turner, defence teams of both countries, AustCham Korea, The Kiwi Chamber (The New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Korea), and ANZA Korea.

AustCham honoured the legacy of those who fought by donating 14 educational scholarships to local middle and high school students from the Gapyeong community thanks to the support of Gold Sponsors Eastpoint Partners Limited, IFM Investors, Macquarie Group, POSCO Holdings, Pepper Savings Bank Korea, and Woodside Energy. AustCham Korea would like to extend our special thanks to John Walker and Pepper Savings Bank Korea for making additional donations.

AustCham Attends 2022 ANZAC Day Dawn Service

On Monday, April 25, AustCham Korea attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the War Memorial of Korea, where the sacrifices and contributions made by our Australian and New Zealand soldiers were recognised and remembered. Following the service, AustCham members took part in a wreath-laying presentation at the Australian monument in the Role of Honour hall.

“ANZAC” was the name given to a combined force of First Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Army troops who landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula at around dawn on Sunday, the 25th day of April, 1915, barely nine months after the outbreak of World War I.

Galvanised by the example of courage and sacrifice demonstrated on that bloody battlefield, on the 10th day of January 1916 a public meeting of Brisbane citizens voted unanimously to establish the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee to lay the groundwork for a nationwide, solemn day of public remembrance on the first anniversary of the landings.

On every 25th day of April for the past 100 years, “ANZAC Day” has been observed in Australia and New Zealand, becoming an honoured and sacred institution along the way.

POSCO International Acquires Australian Energy Firm Senex

Congratulations to AustCham Korea Gold Sponsor POSCO for their acquisition of Australian energy firm Senex Energy Limited.

South Korean trading firm POSCO International Corp said on March 31 that it has completed an acquisition of Australian energy company Senex Energy, as part of its effort to put more focus in eco-friendly energy businesses.

The Korean firm clinched a deal in December last year with Senex Energy to own 50.1 percent of shares of the Australian company at 405 billion won ($334 million). It took three months to receive authorities’ approval.

The latest acquisition marks the company’s first global deal after its parent company launched holding company Posco Holdings in March, to focus on charting out future business, research and investment.

The company said its buying out of Senex Energy will enhance corporate value and contribute to the country’s energy security, amid continued global supply chain issues and oil price hikes.

Senex Energy is Australia’s fifth-largest petroleum gas company which operates three gas fields in Queensland. It sells petroleum gas to LNG liquefaction plants and gas power plants. In 2021, the firm recorded annual sales of 1.16 million Australian dollars ($868,300), with an operating profit of AU$250,000.

“Acquiring Senex Energy will, in the short term, allow us to secure additional reserves of natural gas, and in the long term, give us a foothold to step further to achieve the company goal of energy transition and carbon neutrality,” said Posco International CEO Joo Si-bi.

POSCO Named Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association

Congratulations to AustCham Korea's Gold Sponsor POSCO for being names Sustainability Champion, a first for a Korean steel company, in the regular conference of the World Steel Association in the first half of the year, which was held in London, UK, on April 11 and 12.

The World Steel Association has been selecting companies that lead sustainability in the steel industry as Sustainability Champion among about 140 members since 2018. A total of 15 steel companies have been selected as of last year by reevaluating all member companies every year to encourage them to maintain a high level of sustainable management. This year, only POSCO was chosen, while six existing sustainability champions were eliminated and only nine companies were selected again.

To become a Sustainability Champion, companies should satisfy the following five requirements: i) selection as an excellent sustainability member ii) a finalist in the Steelie Awards iii) publication of a sustainability report iv) submission of sustainability data and v) submission of carbon emission by material and process (Life Cycle Inventory, LCI) data. The steel makers selected as Sustainability Champions are recognized as exemplary cases of ESG management and receive the highest honor.

POSCO satisfied all of the five criteria and was selected as the only new best member this year in recognition of its efforts and achievements in ESG management, including the Net-zero carbon 2050 Declaration, establishment of dedicated ESG organization, and establishment of advanced governance.

Maersk plans to launch the first container ship using carbon-neutral fuel next year, and is building 12 larger liners that run on green methanol too.
