AustCham-ESWS Walkation

AustCham Korea is pleased to partner with one of our long-standing CSR partners, the 동방사회복지회 (Eastern Social Welfare Society), in holding a ‘AustCham-ESWS Walkation’ to raise funds to support single mothers.

Although arranging a group event is difficult given the Level 4 social distancing restrictions, we encourage you to sign up to the event individually or arrange to walk in groups of 2-4 at a time and place that suits you. The AustCham Korea Secretariat, CSR Committee and Board Members will be supporting the initiative and encouraging other members, companies, and families to join the event!

‘WALKATION’ is…a combination of the words, WALK and VACATION; it’s a contactless fundraiser in which you can take part in whenever and wherever you want during your summer vacation (without having to meet people in person to participate in it).

While the walkation requires participants to walk 10,000 steps each, we are encouraging that we all work together in achieving a total collective amount of 8,925,196 steps, which is the equivalent of the distance between SouthKorea and Australia (6,801km).

Registration closes today so register below to join the event! Remember, the walkation doesn’t have to be completed in one go and you have until September 30th to count your steps in total.

Key details:

- The participation fee is KRW30,000 per person
- All proceeds will go to ESWS projects and initiatives that support single mothers
- There is no set course, just need to walk 10,000 steps (around 8 km)
- Sign-up here: https://lnkd.in/gdgfN-7G
- RSVP deadline: August 31 (today)
- Participation (walking) deadline: September 30

International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) Rescheduled to 2022

Due to ongoing travel and gathering restrictions, and the rise of COVID-19 infections around Australia, IMARC and its founding partners, have made the difficult but appropriate decision to reschedule the 2021 edition of the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC).

IMARC 2021 will move to the new dates of January 31 - February 2, 2022, with the hybrid event taking place in-person at the Melbourne Showgrounds, and online for those that cannot attend in-person.

While it is disappointing that this important industry event has had to be postponed, this is the responsible action to take under the circumstances, as the health and safety of IMARC’s participants is the number one priority.

BHP, MMG, Newcrest, Mitsui, OceanaGold and Kirkland Lake Gold have all confirmed their continued support for IMARC in January 2022, with their executive leadership teams confirmed to speak within the conference program.

In addition to the Federal Minister for Resources, the Hon Keith Pitt, and major sponsors METS Ignited, Caterpillar, ABB and World Gold Council who have also confirmed their support and participation.

IMARC 2021’s new dates are aligned with the expected easing of restrictions from all states across Australia, allowing for strong domestic representation.

The co-located Mines and Money Online Connect @ IMARC virtual event, will go ahead as planned from October 19-21.

In the lead up to January 2022, attendees will be invited to participate in the brand-new Talk It Forward Dialogue, a three-part virtual interview series of events.

Discussing big issues such as indigenous and community partnerships, environmental and sustainable principles, and attracting the next generation of STEM leaders; the series will feature specialists in these fields, providing an outsider’s perspective that will help take the mining industry forward. Register your interest here.

AustCham Korea looks forward to continuing our support of the event that will be bringing industry together to Melbourne from January 31 - February 2, 2022.

POSCO Signs MoU with Renascor Resources

AustCham Korea's Silver Sponsor, POSCO, have deepened their investment into Australia’s critical minerals sector, having signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Renascor Resources Limited.

The MOU was for the purchase of 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes per annum of purified spherical graphite from Renascor’s developing battery anode material operation in South Australia.

Renascor managing director David Christensen said the company was thrilled to secure the future of its operation.

“We are delighted to be working with POSCO, a world leader in the supply of lithium-ion battery materials with an established track-record of working with Australian companies including, most recently, Australian suppliers of battery minerals,” Christensen said.

POSCO recently signed another MOU with Rio Tinto to explore low-carbon emission technologies from iron ore mining to steelmaking.
In May, the Korean manufacturer also acquired a 30 per cent stake in the Ravensthorpe nickel operation from First Quantum Minerals in Western Australia.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan MP backed Renascor’s commitment to the Australian critical minerals sector.

“Renascor’s strategy is to become one of the world’s leading suppliers of purified spherical graphite, an important valued-added graphite product that is a critical mineral for lithium-ion batteries – from right here in Australia,” Christensen said.

“The Australian Government’s strong support for Renascor has been instrumental in underscoring the critical importance of our battery anode material operation in the renewable energy and EV industries.”

The volume offtaken by POSCO has helped Renascor’s to fulfill its stage one targets and has warranted consideration to expand both stage one and two at the operation.

So far, 60,000 tonnes per annum of purified spherical graphite has been secured from the Renascor operation.
